Christian Education at Holy Trinity Education programs for both youth and adults are integral to the formation and enrichment of a well-rounded Christian. The Sunday School Program, offered to children age 2 through grade 5, uses the lectionary-based curriculum “Living the Good News,” with weekly lessons as an extension of the readings from the church service supplemented with crafts, games, art and story activities that support and enhance the lesson. This program includes posters for the teachers to use during each lesson and take-home activities for the youngsters to share with their families. Each class has two teachers. Journey to Adulthood is a complete youth ministry program of spiritual formation for 6th - 12th grades which uses Bible study, prayer, rites of passage, outreach ministries and both serious and playful activities to underscore its core principles that manhood and womanhood are free gifts from God and that adulthood must be earned. Rite 13, for 12 and 13 year olds (6th & 7th or 7th & 8th graders), is the first two years of the Journey to Adulthood program which focuses on celebrating the individuality and the creative potential of each young person through use of the Rite-13 liturgy (A Celebration of Manhood and Womanhood). J2A (Journey to Adulthood), for 8th & 9th or 9th and 10th graders, is the middle portion of the program which engages youth with the skills and critical thinking involved in adulthood. It includes a component where the youth plan and embark on a pilgrimage together at the end of this segment. YAC (Young Adults in Church), for 14 and 15 year olds, is a mentor-based program which helps older teens -- in 11th and 12th grades––to discern and carry out a ministry within their church or in the larger community. The program also emphasizes vocation and development of a personal credo. The Holy Trinity Youth Ministry: The Youth Ministry offers and encourages social fellowship and long-term Christian development for pre-school through high school age individuals. This Ministry includes activities such as the Advent Event, Easter egg decorating, pageants, sports events, "lock-ins," water skiing trips, etc. Christian education activities include Children's Chapel for pre-schoolers, Sunday School for children in 1st through 5th grades, and J2A (Journey to Adulthood) for young adults in middle and high school. Contact: John Daniels jdaniels@htrinity.org, Youth Minister. The Sunday Discussion forum provides a time for a diversity of programs — from hands–on activities such as sandwich making for Martha’s Table and the Advent Event to studies and information reports. In 2007, The Education Ministry sponsored Via Media, an evangelism tool that presents the basic tenets of Christianity from an inclusive, Anglican approach to scripture, traditions, and reason, leading the participants to a broader view of the journey of faith and the role that the Church can play in society. The Bible Study group that meets each Sunday during the education hour is studying William Barclay’s commentary on the Gospel of Mark. The Rectory Readers meet in the Rectory on Wednesday mornings at 8 AM to discuss a section of its current book. The group starts with a half-hour continental breakfast and fellowship, and then discusses the reading until 10:00. The group reads and discusses a book chosen by group members. The books cover a wide range, e.g., history, biography, fiction, etc., as long as they are in some way related to religion. Members, who alternate as hosts and discussion leaders, buy their own books. Participants have commented that they are enjoying authors and books they might not have read otherwise, and experience insights and learning from one another in the group. Contemplative Studies meets on Wednesday mornings in the Rectory to contemplate different elements of our faith. In the past, it completed an overview of the Bible and studied contemplative prayer and the messages of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany, and the Psalms. Education Ministry Chair Kimberly Evans leads the group. Education For Ministry (EFM), sponsored by The University of the South School of Theology, is a program that interweaves a theological study of the Bible, church history, current events, and everyday life. It is a 4–year program, with participants signing up for one “year” at a time—from September to June. Using several books as guides, participants study the Old Testament the first year; the New Testament, the second year; church history, the third year; and 20th century events, the fourth year. Eight to 12 students in all four years of study meet together one evening a week for 2 hours. A typical evening session includes, for the first hour (after the howdy-do’s), one person sharing a “theological reflection” – that is, a event from that one's life, an article from the newspaper or the internet, or an object that is meaningful, and together we relate that to our scripture readings from our week’s studies. Magically, or spiritually, the discussion comes together in a way that has helps EFM students to find God’s will for us – how to serve, how to minister, how to cope, how to be joyful, how to learn His ways. The class meets on Wednesday evenings in the French/Sacred Studies Room. The Education Ministry actively focuses mainly on strengthening and expanding the adult education program from September through May. On Sundays, parishioners participate in the Sunday Discussion or Bible Study after the 9:30 AM service. On Wednesdays, Holy Trinity offers several programs: a book group, contemplative studies led by the Assistant Rector, and Education for Ministry. In addition to, or in conjunction with, the adult education programs, The Education Ministry Committee would love to hear new ideas, as it is trying to develop programs to meet parishioners' interests, needs and individual ministries. The Education Ministry is also working on ways to help people fulfill their own education ministries and ensure that those who serve in this area are able to move on when they are ready to turn to new interest and ministries. The Education Minstry wants to establish a ‘flow’ of people serving in this area so that no one is overburdened or feels stuck in a given position. This will be a challenge, but success will help all those involved to create stronger ministries. The Education Ministry Committee meets on the third Sunday of each month after Sunday School (about 11:45 AM). Feel free to attend the meeting if you have ministry ideas you want to discuss, or are just interested in the topic. Members of the Education Ministry are: Kimberly Evans, Richard Keller, Godwin Madueke and Gerry Perez. |
